New Vikings Stadium News & Notes – April 11, 2014

Watch It Disappear

If you haven’t already seen it, check out this dramatic time-lapse video provided by EarthCam today that shows the Metrodome’s final deflation and ensuing demolition. Then remember that it was less than three months ago – on January 18 – the power was shut off for the final time.

First Horizontal Concrete Poured

It may not sound that exciting, but the new home for Vikings football took a significant step forward today with the first horizontal concrete pouring. The 277 cubic yard-deck will form the ceiling or “lid” of the stadium’s loading dock. Next week fans will begin to see the main concourse concrete being poured. Check out today’s video of the concrete pour and view the latest demolition photos from Vikings Team Photographer Andy Kenutis.

Room to Breathe

Speaking of concourses, the two 360-degree concourses within the new stadium will range anywhere from 32-50 feet wide, providing elbow room for fans who for years had to deal with the cramped 24-foot wide concourses at the Metrodome. In the new building, the concourses will also provide various views into the bowl, ensuring fans will stay connected to the game even when grabbing food and beverages. TCF Bank Stadium Modifications to Begin Next Week

Following the Gophers Spring Game this Saturday, officials will begin to remove the field at TCF Bank Stadium sometime next week, replacing it with the hydronic heated field that will ensure a safe playing surface for the Vikings late games in 2014 and 2015. Along with the field replacement, the list of stadium modifications will include increased storage space throughout the facility, heating for various areas within the stadium, and concession upgrades in the stadium’s concourses. The Vikings will also install temporary bleachers to accommodate approximately 2,000 additional fans, bringing the total capacity to TCF Bank Stadium above 52,000.
